Despite tens of millions of pounds being spent on setting up the new school in Rochester, it has become impossible to run safely.
Children were able to damage the security doors and staff told us that violence is rife.

A rather tight-lipped, somewhat hard-faced and interrupting female journalist, I felt … [as usual, pushed for time …], with an interviewee who was I felt being open, accountable, responsive and honest … Did she do her Channel 4-ethos task well? Or Did she veer into crude, two-dimensional popularist attitudes, behind her questions …?
Did she adequately nod to the nature, commitment and skills of the man [40 years in that work] she interviewed, & did she show sufficient respect for that?
Do you think at present what actually happens to YO's with violent histories, in longer-term custody, deals with the immediate, AND overall, problems our society's played its part in creating here??
Mmmm, jury's out on those I feel. Whaddya think [thoughtfully please]??
I worked at a brand new PRU in 2014 in my city that was set up in same way: open plan, no security, relaxed approach. It was carnage. Our version of Steve lasted 6 months because they were so idealized despite their loving best intentions. He's an evangelical Christian and has a inherebt need for external validation of 'my vision'
from others. Young people are desperate for the boundaries through attachment that most of us don't even realise we have. Having said all of that i still commend Mr Chalke and his staff for their best intentions
Typical response deny deny deny. So Millions spent and it is then called "an Experiment" It was a total waste of tax payers money. Why use emotions to get a point across, it was so pathetic. Emotions are a failure in instances like this and to see this man saying he was "Crying" is just not what we need in prisons.
That place was a risk to staff , period. Violence is and was rife there, from the get go!!!
Management lost control. High staff turn over…FACT. MANAGEMENT IS TOXIC THERE. LOTS OF STAFF MANAGEMENT WERE TOXIC . FAMILY MEMBERS WORKING TOGETHER THERE MADE FOR A TOXIC ENVIROBMENT TO WORK WITH IN!…FACT!
I bet this man also believes in elves and pixies.
I remember Steve Chalk from children's telly when I was younger – in the 90s I think. He was on as an agony uncle/counsellor and he was brilliant.
I totally agree with him about giving children and young people a chance.
He's so right. X
100% behind Steve Chalk
His title is 'Rev'. I wonder if there was a chaplain or any Christian input at all. If you want to read about success in reaching violent young people read 'The Cross and the Switchblade' by David Wilkerson.
Amazing interview. I went from 😠 to 🙄 to 😥 to 👏❤️👏
Lord of the Flies 2: Oasis resorts.
why is he so happy throughout the interview, that's just weird
😅
Con man
these guys are just another Ltd company trying to make a profit, and Ltd companies trying to make a profit will always cut costs wherever they can, staffing, catering, equipment, services, security. it's exactly the same reason our adult prison system is in such a shambles, not to mention it's in their interest for there to be more children being punished, reducing recidivism reduces their profits, the more youth crime there is, the fatter their back pocket becomes, funded with our taxes
The experiment has failed
Steve Chalke has such heart, if anyone can make this work for these broken young people it is him.
