A British school has been forced to close for the day, because of an outbreak of Britain’s most venomous spider.
The Dean Acacdemy in Gloucestershire has shut down after “identifying an issue” with false widow spiders.
The school was shut to allow pest controllers to fumigate the site.
Experts say the chances of being bitten by a false black widow were extremely low and no-one had ever died from a spider bite in the UK.
The Natural History Museum’s Insect Information Service said: “There are 640 species of spider in the UK. Only 12 of these have been known to bite humans in the UK.
“The severity of symptoms from any spider bite depends on the amount of venom that is injected. False widow spider bite reports include symptoms such as chest pains, swelling and tingling of fingers.”
A succession of mild winters in the UK has seen the survival of such creatures increase, especially along the south coast of England.
Craig Burns, vice principal of The Dean Academy, said: “We have identified an issue with ‘false widow’ spiders in the academy. We have taken the decision to close the academy all day on Wednesday 23rd October 2013 in order that the appropriate pest control work can be undertaken. We are advised that it will be safe for students to return to school on Thursday 24th October.
“Please accept my sincere apologies for any inconvenience this may cause you but I’m sure you will understand that this is in the best interest of students’ health and safety”

Aint that a noble widow?
That's an or free for you little dumb dumb dumb
This video shows missing sector orb weaver!! It’s not even a frigging noble false widow !!
I found one in my old home, but I didn't hurt it. I moved out of harms way and out the way so it couldn't bite anyone.
Euronews are feckin bellends and health and safety nazi's are turning people into wimps. As others have already correctly pointed out, the spider shown in the footage is the humble and harmless garden spider, of which there are probably 100's in everyones garden in the UK. The false widow is increasing in numbers worldwide, not just in the UK but are harmless if you leave them alone. To get it in context, 69 people have been killed by dogs in England and Wales since 2001. No one in that period has been killed by a spider. Yeah way to go…just turn all the kids into arachnophobics for nothing. 🙄
The Deadly Missing Sector Spider 👍 well if the School had a Mosquito problem after this they are only too blame….
Besides now in 2024 the Noble False Widow has become a very invasive Species detrimental to numerous other Species of UK Spiders found around the Home etc.
But then Bites are rare and severe reactions are extremely Rare
It looks like a lace weaver or missing sector spider. Harmless species
It's false widow – not a false black widow
They're called False widow spiders not False black widow
I have like millions of false widows in my house😂
wow that school making us brits look like idiots. thats an orb weaver
Hahahah 🤣
Bruh I have two false black widows and I can tell you right now that this spider is a missing sector orb weaver which is completely harmless to humans. smh
Those are orb weavers 😂😂 they don’t even bite
Someone has died from a spider bite in the UK now….
As someone who spends her time researching spiders, I can tell you that the spider in the video was a missing sector orb weaver, and they are totally harmless to humans. Orb weavers are one of my favourite spider families, and in this video some of the spiders have egg sacs. Nature is beautiful!
Zyigilla x nota ( missing sector orb weaver ) not even a false widows . Media are desperate for every opportunity 🤣🤣
