For Hertford, you forgot to mention Queen Elizabeth the first use to frequently visit Hertford Castle during her childhood and reign. As a young princess, she lived there under the care of a governess and even wrote a book of prayers there at the age of twelve, dated "Hertford 1545" . Later, as Queen, she visited the castle frequently, including when Parliament was driven from London by the plague and held sessions there. The castle also served as a royal home and fortress for over 900 years.
Cheshunt, Wormley, Stevenage?
a good presentation……I thought Harpenden would have been mentioned
I'm liking these – a sort of John Shuttleworth meets Judith Chalmers vibe 😊
Small correction – the Icknield Way is a probably a pre-Roman road. It may date back 4000 years, but there is admittedly some argument about that.
Ohh wow, he put my town as number 1.
St Albans to me is kind of boring personally.
I can’t believe I live here. I don’t go out much because of mental health problems and being shunned by most people I meet on the streets but I would love to explore my county of Hertfordshire more.
One error – Letchworth isn’t really a proper Garden City – it is where the concept was first tried out in a suburb of the existing town (which explains the differences you noted) Then he looked around for a fresh start to build his full vision from scratch aka WGC. Well is the first proper Garden City, Letchworth pushes that name in its marketing but it really only applies to a suburb.
Im sorry but your idea of
PRETTY and mine is vastly different the prettiest to me was lot lower down your list with flowers and beautiful hanging baskets along the street. Loved seeing the buildings and the history of each place but pretty no way. Just change the world pretty for a different description.
Give it another 20 years, and all these towns will start to look like the undesirable side of Hemel Hempstead… full of vape shops, poundstretchers, turkish barbers and more betting shops than there are racing horses. The UK is becoming a right sh*thole. Apart from the occasional pretty village, rare but here and there, the majority of this country is sadly a dump.
A blast from the past for me, I grew up in WGC, did my childcare training in Ware, worked for 18 months on the children s ward in St Alban's hospital, temporarily lived in St Alban's again with my in laws before living in Letchworth for a few years.I regularly return to WGC asu have sisters in the area..
Thanks so very much for this video! I was born in Stevenage Hertfordshire in 1961 then I came to Australia with my parents in 1963. So seeing these gorgeous places is amazing, so very pretty!
Well don
I went to Hertford recently and it surprised me how run down it was. It was nowhere near as nice as pics suggest. St Albans is lovely and lots of Hertfordshire are nicer than Hertford. Though the canal walk from Hertford to Ware is pleasant.
Welwyn Garden City ???? Are you kidding ? It's just a mass of housing estates around a John Lewis. You won't even see a corner shop. I go there for B&Q or Waitrose.
But if you go to hertfordshire Keep your mouth shut and don't say anything About not liking anything or you'll go to jail
Honestly wasn't expecting my home town Hemel to get any sort of mention, so thank you for including it. The old town is indeed a delight.
As a Cambridge-ite I am always interested in Hertfordshire. Hitchin looks more historical and charming than I realised.
I live in Stevenage having moved there from North London eighteen years ago. It is lovely to live near and visit all these towns.
Lived in Hertfordshire for 5 years in Cheshunt and I don’t know how it didn’t get a mention
