One of pop’s least likely cult stars sits down with Popcast to discuss returning to the spotlight following her breakout debut “Preacher’s Daughter,” an ambient detour and some recent controversy.
As Ethel Cain, the singer and songwriter Hayden Anhedönia will release her second studio album, “Willoughby Tucker, I’ll Always Love You,” on August 8.

More from The New York Times Video: http://nytimes.com/video
The New York Times interviewers could have shortened their questions by at least 80 percent, allowing more time for EC to speak. At times, it felt like they were competing to see who could phrase things more convolutedly.
Anyone from FL has said the N word at least 5 times, get over it people
Incredible. I relate to the way she speaks about her journey with music making deeply <3
5:00 if you like feeling bad, then youre actually feeling good
It is rather jarring how aggressively the section discussing Palestine was edited and cut together when compared to the rest of the interview
etthel caine basically slim shady
THIS COULDVE BEEN SO GOOD IF YALL WERENT ISRAEL SUPPORTERS AND CUT OUT WHEN SHE TALKS ABOUT GAZA
I CANNOT BELIEVE YALL CENSORED HER AT 38:00 !!!!!!!!! FREE PALESTINE!!!!!!!!!!!!
Love her and her art. Her fans put a sour taste in my mouth and I unfortunately associate their behavior with her, but she’s genuinely such a good person and I appreciate her being upfront and apologetic for what she’s said in the past.
Ethel saved me
Why is it illegal to speak out against genocide? Wtf. Bullshit. Israel never forgets what happened to them but we are all just supposed to ignore what's happening to Palestine?
She is so eloquent and likeable and down-to-earth and humble. I mean, how can you hate not like her.
love her and her mind so much. love u hayden if you’re reading this
god bless idf!
I like how she's introspective about all this.
she is so incredible i love her so much 😭❤️🩹
This is arguably the most important interview out right now because as Cains work is centred around processing broken upbringing and environments etc, for her to be open about taking the same approach to her inner world by taking responsibility for any toxicity she put out into the world without scapegoating mind you) shows incredible integrity. We shouldn’t ask for more because I’m not sure it’s possible.
Great interview, but that censored part that was obviously about Gaza… Yikes.
Here because of @thatzack
