UK Surpasses 100,000 Public Charge Points in Major Step Forward

The United Kingdom has reached a defining milestone in its journey towards a low-emission transport system. There are now over 100,000 public charge points installed across the country. This landmark figure, revealed in the latest Charging Infrastructure Insights report from Octopus Electroverse, signifies the remarkable pace of change in the UK’s electric vehicle (EV) transition and highlights the increasing accessibility of EV infrastructure for drivers nationwide.

Public Charge Points Accelerating Across the UK

According to the report, a new public charge point was added every 13 minutes over the past six months. This rapid rollout is improving the quality of EV charging across the country. Rapid and ultra-rapid chargers have emerged as the fastest-growing category, now accounting for 24% of all public charge points in the UK. These high-speed units drastically reduce charging times. This offers convenience for motorists needing a quick top-up on the move. This is particularly helpful for longer journeys.

The expansion of public charge points is a crucial factor in building consumer confidence. It is certainly encouraging more drivers to switch to electric vehicles. With charging infrastructure becoming more visible and reliable, range anxiety is quickly being replaced by convenience and reassurance.

Public Charge Points Supporting National Targets and Policy Goals

The UK Government’s ambitious goal of reaching 300,000 public charge points by 2030 is greatly supported by the growing infrastructure. This is a key part of its broader net-zero strategy. The target is designed to accompany the proposed phase-out of new petrol and diesel vehicles, ensuring that drivers have the infrastructure needed to adopt zero-emission alternatives.

Investing in a resilient and far-reaching charging network is seen as a cornerstone of the country’s efforts to reduce emissions from road transport. This remains one of the largest contributors to greenhouse gases in the UK. As such, public charge points are more than just practical installations, they are integral to national climate objectives and urban planning strategies. Not to mention the significant health benefits from promoting the switch to electric vehicles.

EV Manufacturing Gathers Pace

Parallel to infrastructure developments, the UK is seeing rapid growth in its electric vehicle manufacturing sector. Recent data from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) reveals that electrified vehicle production increased by 38.5% in March 2025. This totals 31,661 units, a rate more than double the overall growth of the vehicle production sector.

Electric vehicles now represent a substantial 45% of all cars manufactured in the UK, marking a fundamental shift. Overall car production climbed 17.1% to 79,018 units. This includes an impressive 73.3% exported to key markets such as the European Union, United States, and China.

The Road Ahead is Getting Shorter

With the UK’s public charge points network now exceeding 100,000 units, plus EV production surging, the UK’s move towards electric mobility is no longer a distant goal. This is truly a reality in motion. However, to maintain momentum, continued investment is needed in grid capacity. Charging infrastructure in rural areas, and policies that promote affordability and accessibility for all are also clearly needed.

Still, the signs are promising. The growing alignment between government policy, private investment, and consumer demand is creating the conditions for greener, cleaner transport. As more public charge points come online and electric vehicles become the norm on British roads, the UK is well on track to lead the global transition towards sustainable mobility. EV Sales will continue to be at the forefront of this movement, providing the highest quality in ex-rental and specialist new electric vehicles.
