Three Memoirs: Leonard, The Seasons of My Mother and What Falls Away

I dove into three truly compelling hardbound memoirs, each one offering a distinct and intimate portrait of its author’s life. These books have not only drawn me in through their storytelling, but also left me with a deeper appreciation for resilience, friendship, and family.

The first memoir, Leonard: My Fifty-Year Friendship with a Remarkable Man by William Shatner with Dave Fisher offers a fascinating behind-the-scenes look at not only Shatner’s life but also his friendship with Leonard Nimoy. One of the most surprising revelations was that the two had met before they ever set foot on the set of Star Trek.  However, it was their connection on Star Trek that laid the foundation for what became a life-long relationship. Shatner’s account is candid and affectionate. The reflections show cases Nimoy’s intellect, compassion, and complexity. I found the read engaging.

The second memoir, The Seasons of My Mother by Marcia Gay Harden, touched me in a very personal way. Harden’s devotion to her mother, who battled Alzheimer’s disease, is inspiring. What stood out most to me was the grace with which she chose to focus on her mother’s attributes—her creativity, her elegance, and her unwavering strength—even as the disease slowly took its toll. It’s a loving tribute that honors the dignity of her journey and is a candid reminder that we can love others through difficult circumstances.

The third memoir, What Falls Away by Mia Farrow, is written with emotional sensitivity. I found myself particularly moved by the way Farrow revisits her childhood. Her recollections are rich with sensory detail, especially when she writes about the children in her life during her period of physical illness. Despite her own struggles, she evokes a sense of warmth and connection to those around her. The memoir is gentle and strong and I kept thinking about what Mia went through in childhood long after I finished.

Each book brought something different to the table, and reading them side by side has been an emotional, enlightening, and worthwhile experience.
