The new Nielsen streaming charts are available and the Andor episodes 7 through 9 were added. How does the show fare? In absolute numbers very, very well.
Andor is now the #5 show on the general streaming charts (it was #6 last week) and is still #3 on the original series charts with 830 million minutes watched, a slight increase over last week where it was 821 million.
But how does that compare to previous shows? Click through for more!
I converted all numbers to theoretical views (watchtime / runtime) to make shows with wildly different runtimes comparable, something that has now become the standard to compare streaming shows.
Andor S2 – week 3: 6.06 million views
The Acolyte – week 3: 8.18 million views
Andor S1 – week 3: 8.25 million views
Ahsoka S1 – week 3: 11.89 million views
The Book of Boba Fett – week 3: 12.53 million views
The Mandalorian S3 – week 3: 14.15 million views
Obi-Wan Kenobi – week 3: 18.77 million views
No numbers for Skeleton Crew exist, since it never entered the charts.
So the impressive total watchtime for Andor is of course inflated by the sheer amount of content dropped every week. In week 3 it’s about 137 minutes. So like in previous weeks actual views for Andor season 2 seem to be very low, the lowest of all the shows we have actual data for and it’s even about 25% lower than for Andor season 1.
As to why that is we can only speculate. Perhaps the show lost viewers since 2022, a distinct possibility. Or maybe this time around more people wait for the show to finish so they can binge season 2, especially given how you only have to wait about three weeks or so until you can binge it all over the weekend. Or maybe viewing habits have shifted and fewer people use devices tracked by Nielsen, something that is supported by usage device statistics.
It’s also difficult to truly compare Andor season 2 to all the previous shows that only dropped one short-ish episode per week, I would argue the roughly 2h15 mins of content dropped each week are not watched all at once by many people and they only catch up later, which may reduce weekly numbers.
It will be interesting to see how Andor fares on the charts post finale, i.e. if it will still be on the Nielsen charts then, like it was on the Luminate charts where Andor remained in the top 10 for another two weeks at least (as I write this the new Luminate charts are not out yet, but since the show was #10 last week I suppose it’s likely it has dropped out of the top 10 this week, I will update the article if the new Luminate charts say otherwise). Which would support the “more people binge it this time” theory.
But if you look at just watchtime and charts performance then Andor season 2 can be considered a success for Disney. It’s the first show in a long time to be reliably in the overall top 10 shows. And it competes with shows that have a lot more episodes. Andor with 21 episodes has about as much total watchtime as Grey’s Anatomy with 448 episodes and is close on the heels of Bluey with 157 episodes, it will be interesting to see if the Andor finale can beat Bluey, which is usually the #1 show on Disney+.
What else: as usual Disney+ is vastly underpresented on the charts with just three entries, Bluey, Andor and Moana 2. Netflix is absolutely dominating the charts with 13 exclusive entries (i.e. nothing that is shared with another streaming service). In a recent interview Tony Gilroy said that Disney will never make something like Andor again, because ultimately the return on investment is too small, even if Andor will make a small profit probably. But it’s becoming ever more apparent that many Disney+ subscribers do not have the service for their original content but vast family/kid friendly library of animated shows and movies.
I will return next week with the numbers for the Andor finale!
