One Step Recognized for Successful Ketamine Addiction Treatment
The Telegraph’s Eleanor Steafel wrote how ketamine has became a middle-class addiction by stealth. The article highlights how the mother of a 19 year old ketamine user found One Step rehab in Thailand after unsuccessful attempts of recovery at a rehab center in England.
A life-changing breakthrough for Julia and Emily
Julia contacted One Step to enquire about treatment for ketamine addiction. Her daughter, Emily was no longer the vibrant young woman she once knew and desperately needed help to overcome her ketamine use.
Weighing only 36 kilos, she was often confined to her bedroom, gripped by unrelenting abdominal cramps that seemed to ease only with small doses of a white powder.
Her health was in a devastating decline. Her bladder was damaged to the extent that she was incontinent. As her death seemed inevitable, she realized ‘It’s up to me to save her life.’
“Julia found a rehabilitation centre in Thailand which, to her great surprise, was no more expensive than the one she had already paid for in England – a miserable place which hadn’t worked for Emily” – Eleanor Steafel, The Telegraph
Julia recalls. “I thought, I’ve found somewhere safe for her.” Unlike the previous facility, One Step focused on helping patients experience enjoyment without drugs.
After three months at our treatment center in northern Thailand, Emily was finally clean and feeling mentally stronger than she had in years.
She called Julia to say she didn’t want to come home – returning to London, where ketamine is all too accessible. “It was a relief that she was well enough to recognize that,” Julia says.
In September, Julia traveled to visit her daughter in Chiang Mai after being apart for 5 months. They spent ten days reconnecting, sharing moments and beginning to talk about the hardship they’d endured.

Emily had surgery in Thailand to expand her bladder capacity, increasing it fivefold and transforming her daily life.
One of the benefits of our One Step to Recovery treatment program is having access to world-class hospitals here in Chiang Mai. Affordable care without waiting lists makes Thailand a global leader in medical tourism.
For Julia and Emily, a mix of determination, resources, and timing allowed them to navigate the painful journey of ketamine addiction. But for many others, the reality is starkly different – especially with experts warning that the current rise in cases may only hint at a much larger crisis.
