Review of the World Cup in Shanghai

Mexico and the United States won five medals at the second stage of the World Cup in Shanghai.

The competition was held from May 6 – 11; the qualification and elimination phases took place at the Yuanshen Stadium while the finals were held at the Pudong Riverside Financial Plaza. 

Brazil, Mexico and the United States were the only countries from the Americas to compete.

 

Qualifying

Mexico’s Andrea Maya Becerra once again qualified in first place in the compound women’s category with 711 points. In this same category, her compatriot Adriana Castillo managed to be within the first eight positions with 704 points in seventh position. 

Rodrigo Gonzalez of Mexico was the best classified in the men’s compound in eighth position with 710 points.

Matias Grande of Mexico and Christian Stoddard of the United States managed to qualify in the top eight, in seventh and eighth position with 683 and 679 points respectively.

The best classified in the recurve women was Casey Kaufhold from the United States in tenth position with 659 points.

 

Teams

The United States won its first team medal in recurve men’s team in three years. Brady Ellison, Christian Stoddard and Jack Willimas faced India for the bronze medal and won 5-3 set points.

In the compound categories, Mexico disputed two gold medals, both matches against India.

Andrea Becerra, Mariana Bernal and Adriana Castillo won gold in the compound women with a total score of 234-222. This was the second consecutive World Cup gold for Mexico in this category.

Sebastian Garcia, Rodrigo Gonzalez and Luis Lezama took silver with a score of 228-232 in favor of the Indians.

 

Mixed Teams

The best performance of the Americas in mixed teams was that of the Brazilian duo formed by Ana Luiza Sliachticas Caetano and Marcus D’Almeida, who took fifth place in the recurve competition. 

 

Individual Finals

Carso Krahe of the United States faced Madhura Dhamangaonkar of India for the gold medal in compound women.

It was an exciting match in which it was not clear who could take the gold medal. In the last series, the Indian got a better score to take the victory by one point difference 139-138. This is the first individual medal for Krahe.

In the recurve men’s event, Mexico’s Matias Grande faced Korea’s reigning Cup champion Kim Woojin. In the first set both archers tied, but from the second set on, Woojin showed total dominance and with two perfect scores in a row took the victory 7-1 set points.

This is also the first individual medal for Grande at the Archery World Cup.
