Liverpool are reportedly considering holding onto Federico Chiesa to give him a chance during pre-season to prove his worth to Aren Slot.
Journalist Ben Jacobs said on the ‘Market Madness‘ podcast that Liverpool are not guaranteed to sell Chiesa even if he is routinely linked with Italian clubs as well as those in the Premier Leaghue.
“Yeah, the rumours keep persisting. It hasn’t worked out perfectly for Chiesa. My understanding is that it’s more likely that we’ll get a pre-season for Chiesa at Liverpool and then a decision will be made,” Jacobs said.
“Were he to leave, Serie A remains his most likely destination, a return there would be his preference.”
This is an approach that makes little sense for Liverpool or Slot
My first instinct upon hearing this claim was to ask: “What was the point of this whole season, then?”
If Liverpool are going to give Chiesa the duration of pre-season to show his talents, then what was he or the coaches during this season?
If the Italian winger was unable to prove he is good enough for Liverpool when he had almost a full year to do so, it seems very hard to believe that a 4-6 week pre-season programme will do the trick.
All that to say, I do actually hope Liverpool keep Chiesa. While his lack of minutes didn’t aid this argument, the former Juventus star is the perfect impact player for Liverpool.
That said, he is currently earning a reported £150,000 per week and if Liverpool are only going to keep him around for competition and squad depth, they can certainly find someone on a lower salary.
Cheisa will hopefully take this reported opportunity to impress and make a place for himself in next season’s Premier League squad as the Reds will return to defend their crown.
