Push Puppets – Tethered Together

2022’s Allegory Grey was a memorable album and one of that year’s surprise highlights. Now, the Push Puppets are back with another gem. Their latest, Tethered Together, features much of the same; memorable choruses, great harmonies and ornate production.

A Cornucopia of Sound

The opening track, “Similar”, starts with a powerful guitar riff followed by lush harmonies, horns, piano and a lovely string arrangement befitting a top pop single. And a killer rhythm section helps, too. Similarly (no pun intended), “Hearts Aren’t Souvenirs” benefits from a pleasing string arrangement along with guitar crunch, emotive vocals and a very catchy chorus.

Ornate production sensibilities carry throughout the album. And while that certainly works, these tracks resonate because underneath it all, the songs are so good. Every album needs a sugar coated pop song. With Allegory Grey, it was “There’s No One Else Like Lynette”. Songs with girls’ names are always good for that. This time around, it’s “Tell Colleen to Calm Down”. It’s a truly memorable tune and one that I suspect will still be rummaging its way through my head for quite some time.

Strings Attached

These are just a few of the highlights contained in the total ten tracks of Tethered Together. And while they certainly relate as a cohesive album, each one has its own distinct charm. The Push Puppets are: Eric Specht (vocals, guitars, string arrangements), Steve Frisbie (backing vocals), Kyle Magnusson (keyboards), John William Lauler (bass), and Greg Essig (drums). The quartet consisting of Stephanie Young (violin), Janis Sakai (violin), Katherine Andrick (viola) and Molly Rife (cello) deserve mention as well. They are truly special.
