Perfect Summer Tracks (Part 2)

Harmony Redford – “Past Tense”

This was just too good a track not to cover. The indie warmth style is a near perfect track to include in any summer playlist. Her singing reminds us a bit of Courtney Barnett or even Wet Leg, but the American songwriter is distinctly unique. “Past Tense” tells the all too familiar story of the change each person goes through after the end of a relationship. Her ability to tell the story is highlighted by her melancholy style and indie bonafides. It is difficult to classify her art in some ways. Her creativity and expression are needed in this current age of music. We would put “Past Tense” side by side with any modern indie pop track. It transcends the moment with heart, not to mention it is simply a great track to bop to.

Pat Hatt – “Drunk on Leaving”

There is an rocking Americana soaked style to this artist that is deeply infectious. “Drunk on Leaving” is the perfect road trip track full of nostalgia and possibility. It leans into some classic troubadour styles including honky tonk and American Aquarium style rock. It is an interesting show of talent that he can take seemingly pop based content and make it authentic. The sound and conviction of Hatt shines through without being stereotypical. This artist has heart which is all we ask from the artists we cover. If “Drunk on Leaving” is any indication, we will continue to hear exceptional art from this artist for years to come.

Thrifty Kid – “Iowa State Fair”

We love this track. The organ. The harmonica solo. The indie credentialed vocals. Taking cues from the greats like John Prine, this Chicago based artist transports listeners to the time of George Jones while still staying modern in sensibility. It is difficult not to smile at some points of “Iowa State Fair”. The joy and reverence is a pure treat for any fan of music despite preference. There is something here that makes us want to pack a bag, jump in the car, and head west. We appreciate this unique and inspired artist.
