With an LA show scheduled on the release of their upcoming SIRENITY EP due June 13 via Dirty Hit and No Matter, Oakland singer-songwriter King Isis reconciles monotonous living on “LATELY.” Although she is no stranger to roaring anthems that evoke the grunge era, their newest single finds them striking a balance when it comes to their artistic pendulum, swinging back and forth between calm introspection and brooding bursts of rock.
“‘Lately’ is a cathartic release,” said Isis. “The recognition that perfection doesn’t exist, that I don’t want to keep going through the motions and acceding to the same things. It’s sick of the same cycles, the same people and the same responses. It’s wanting to stand up for myself, wanting to live for me, even if it defies others expectations. It’s the introduction to new worlds, and new unknowns, allowing myself the beauty of imperfection, of trial and error. That it’s okay to not be okay and try things. Its renewal and cyclic changes at the beginning of Saturn return.”
At first, “LATELY” begins with a gentle guitar as Isis’ vocals establish them as the deciding factor for the song’s mood at any given point. After pondering “Maybe I’m just crazy,” the intensity of “LATELY” comes out, later being unleashed during a climactic release complete with thrashing drums.
While the EP is expected to arrive with a slew of collaborations with fellow producers and artists, including “LATELY” co-producer Bartees Strange, the single already proves King Isis can flourish on their own and balance the genres she brings to the table.
