IO Interactive, the acclaimed Danish studio behind the Hitman franchise, has officially unveiled its upcoming James Bond video game, 007 First Light, during the Sony State of Play 2025 showcase. This third-person action-adventure game promises to deliver a fresh take on the legendary spy, diving into the origin of the man who would become Agent 007.
An Original Story: Bond Before He Was “Bond”
Previously referred to as Project 007, the game now carries the official title 007 First Light, marking a significant milestone in its development journey. Unlike previous Bond games that leaned heavily on the film canon, 007 First Light is set in a completely original universe. IO Interactive has made it clear: this is a reimagined origin story, not tied to any previous movies.
The story follows a 26-year-old James Bond in the earliest days of his MI6 career. He is still learning the ropes—deciding when to fight, bluff, or vanish into the shadows. The tagline #EarnTheNumber hints at the journey players will take, controlling a rookie Bond as he earns the 007 title.
Star Power: Lennie James Joins the Cast
The cinematic trailer not only revealed a young Bond but also confirmed the involvement of Lennie James, best known for his role in The Walking Dead. He will portray John Greenway, Bond’s mentor. The game also introduces fresh takes on beloved characters like M, Q, and Moneypenny, reimagined to fit the new storyline.
Release Platforms and Launch Window
While an exact release date has not been revealed, 007 First Light is slated for a 2026 launch. It will be available on:
- PlayStation 5
- Xbox Series X/S
- Windows PC
- Nintendo Switch 2 (yet to be officially launched)
The game will be enhanced for PlayStation 5 Pro, boasting PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) technology and optimized 60 FPS performance in Quality Mode.

IO Interactive began work on this ambitious Bond project in 2020. CEO Hakan Abrak has shared that 007 First Light is designed to kick off a new trilogy, suggesting a long-term vision that could define the studio’s future just as Hitman did in the past.
