Whitby Abbey

Sitting looking over the seaside town of Whitby is Whitby Abbey. It can be dated to 627 AD. Really the infancy of Christianity in Britain. The Vikings were still 200 years away. A Benedictine Monastery, but an important site for obvious reasons. it has been rebuilt and added to over the centuries. Its Gothic influence that no doubt offered some inspiration to Bram Stoker. I say "some" inspiration as he also drew ideas from Slains Castle in Aberdeenshire for Dracula’s Castle. Its a very insignificant thing to mention as this amazing place of sanctuary has seen so much over the centuries. Now owned by English heritage, it is easily accessed by road and car parking is ample. Do wrap up though as it is tremendously exposed to the weather conditions and being so close to the sea, the weather can change very quickly.
