schubert stands and waits

this is schubert standing and waiting in the hallway. we don’t know exactly what he wants, I take him out front just in case he wants to pee, but often he doesn’t.
last night he roamed, unable to settle, until 2 am.
poor baby. life is not so easy for a standard poodle closing in to age 15.
after dinner tonight I took him out twice, both times he stood at the front gate staring at the closed garage.
finally, with a gentle tap, he came back into the living room and then upstairs with me. then back downstairs.
as schubert ages, he stands around a lot. and he looks for me, usually missing where I am. he doesn’t see well, and he’s mostly deaf, so we use big hand signals and little nudges on his butt to get him to move along.
despite all this, we put on his coat and he runs leaping out to play with the others in the field. he hops up and down, joins one of the running ones, then stops and waits for some other dog to run the arc of the circle in front of him.
he is a happy sweet being.
he loves his car rides, sleeps most of the time in the car, and then joyously races back into the house when we get home, and leaps and jumps when he greets the others.
schubert came from a house with 85 other dogs. his owner was a collector. she loved them all but was overwhelmed trying to care for them. I wish now I could have taken all schubert’s litter mates.
what a blessing he’s been for us.
what an honor to care for him.
