"The blessed Agnes spread out her arms and offered this prayer: ‘Holy Father, to you I pray. I am coming to you, whom I love, whom I have sought, whom I have always desired.’" – Magnificat antiphon for the feast of St Agnes, which is today, 21 January.
The virgin martyr, Agnes, whose name means ‘lamb’ died at the tender age of 12, killed for her faith in Christ.
This image of Christ, the Good Shepherd, fittingly shows the Lord carrying his little lamb and taking it safely home, just as he took St Agnes safely home to eternal rest and glory in heaven.
It is also a fitting reminder of the Octave of Prayer for Christian Unity, when we ask the Good Shepherd to lead his entire flock safely into his one fold as one holy Church.
This window is by Burne Jones and executed by Morris & Co. It is in Buscot parish church.
