Have you seen the "stairways to heaven" photo of the Point Lobos State Natural Reserve I posted a while ago? If you go upstairs and turn left at the top you see this outer world scene. Dead and alive Monterey cypress trees covered in green algae called "trentepohlia aurea". They turn bright orange from carotenoid pigments in the alga cells. This algae species only grows in pristine clear air and feeds from the salty mist of the Pacific ocean – it occurs only at the outermost tip of Point Lobos. There is also white and yellow moss on tree trunks, which adds additional dynamics to the scene.
I carefully applied paintery HDR processing to three source exposures, trying to preserve the natural colors, while highlighting the micro-contrast.
