A view of the 100 block of N. Walnut St. looking south from Taylor St. This block is part of the Champaign Downtown Commercial District added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2020. All of the commercial buildings in this block are Italianate or Early 20th Century Commercial designs built were built in 1909, with the exception of the corner building (122 N. Walnut) that was completed in 1890. I suspect that there must have been a terrible fire or some other major calamity in 1908 or 1909 that destroyed nearly all of buildings in this block as this would explain why all but one of the buildings were constructed in 1909.
The large 6-story building with a glazed yellow brick facade seen in the next block is the old Inman Hotel. Constructed in 1915 and now repurposed as a senior independent living facility, the Inman was separately listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1989.
