This ensemble by Jeremy Scott evokes the stylized, model like poses of Willi Ninja in the video for the 1989 dance single “Deep in Vogue,” on view in this gallery. Known as the “godfather of vogeuing,”(sic) Ninja was a regular fixture of Harlem’s ballroom scene in the 1980s and “mother” of the House of Ninja. He features prominently in Jennie Livingston’s documentary film Paris is Buring(1990), which spotlights New York ballroom culture and its Latino and African American Gay and transgender communities.
