Faculty and students from Rutgers SON teamed with J&J to welcome Japanese nursing students visiting the U.S. for a two-week study tour on disaster nursing. The visitors, eight students and two mentors from Tohoku, are participants in the TOMODACHI J&J Disaster Nursing Training Program. On their August 14 visit to New Brunswick, they started the day at our nursing building on Patterson Street, where they were welcomed by Suzanne Willard, PhD, APN, FAAN, associate dean for global health and specialty director for the HIV Care specialization. Margaret Quinn, DNP, RN, APN-C, CPNP, clinical associate professor, gave a presentation on her experience of losing her home in Superstorm Sandy, her participation in the recovery work and her research on children and disasters. Following a tour of our simulation lab, the group moved to RWJ Hospital, hosted by Helen Miley, PhD, RN, APN-c, clinical assistant professor and specialty director, acute care program. Activities at RWJ included a panel discussion on leadership and advocacy by National Student Nurses Association (NSNA) representatives, including BS in Nursing student April Ancheta, president and treasurer of Rutgers NSNA chapter who also serves as a peer mentor. The TOMODACHI Initiative is a multifaceted, public-private partnership, born out of support for Japan’s recovery from the Great East Japan Earthquake. View photos here.
