THE BEGINNINGS OF THE ABSTRACTION

If the idea is adequate, do not seek external resemblance.
Poet Song. (China 960-1279)

Art is only authentic if it manages to explore the mystery of things.
François CHENG ("All beauty is singular" "From where springs the song" and "Shitao, the flavor of the world" "The art of the trait")

If Edouard Manet is a precursor of the "flat painting", which erases the third dimension, Claude Monet is, among the Impressionists, the most notable annunciator of the non-figurative art. "Impression Rising Sun" dates of 1873. He was preceded in this way by William Turner, of whom he saw the most audacious works in London in 1870 (and also the works of Constable). The National Gallery has indeed exhibited the most advanced paintings of Turner, who died in 1851, as early as 1856.
Jean Baptiste Camille Corot, since the years 1825-1830, during his first period, painted landscape paintings, notably from Italy, which by the reduction of the perspective, the simplification of the lines, the dodging of the details, the flat areas of colors, announce the abstraction.
Claude Monet was also preceded per a romantic painter like Eugène Delacroix, or, even closer to him, per Eugène Boudin, two painters whose somes sketches, and even certain works considered as completed, are at the limit of the non-figurative. Throughout Europe, from the 1850s, painters explore an aesthetic that is the basis of abstract art that will flourish from 1900. This first abstract painting starts from the real, as it is perceived by the eyes of man. Painters take Nature as their starting point. The city is also, but more rarely a theme of this time. The city is not yet around 1850-1900 the obligatory framework of the vast majority of Europeans. Monet paints like contemporary photographers who capture the reflections of the light in the water.

With romantics, pre-impressionists, impressionists and post-impressionists, the break with reality is not totally consumed.. Nature and the human environment remain a sufficiently direct source of artistic inspiration for the general public to perceive clearly the meaning of the work and its connection with the surrounding world. The trees remain trees, stylized but recognizable with their trunks and foliage, even if the latter is already only a uniform spot of color, more or less natural.
It is clear, however, that European painting no longer seeks to "imitate nature", as it had done since the Gothic era, and as had observed and admired Giorgio Vasari around 1550.
All the processes that characterise "modern Art " (1850-1950 in large dates) move European painting away from a faithful, exact, naturalistic representation of the world.
The sketch elevated to the rank of completed painting, the tachism, the dilution of the drawing, or on the contrary its acuteness, the emphasis on the rigor of line and the net outlines, the flattening of the volumes, the attenuation or the disappearance from the perspective ("the flat paint"), the decomposition of forms and masses into their geometrical components, the totally arbitrary colors of Gauguin or Fauves, all these processes of Modern Art, tend to replace a naturalistic representation, exact , in three dimensions, of the world, by an interpretation of the environment of the man, in two dimensions, schematic, symbolic and synthetic. It is this aesthetic that will lead to abstract art.

All these processes "Innovative" of modern art are totally inspired by the Romanesque, Byzantine and Paleocristian art that all the artists frequenting Paris know very well, to see the works in the Louvre. In short, as the Renaissance, modern art finds His inspiration in the European past.
The Negro art so often invoked, quite wrongly, as a source of inspiration for modern European art was a very late source, for some very marginal painters who knew Africa or had seen an African art museum. But we must remember the facts: the Museum of the Pacific and African Arts of Paris dates from 1931 and the Museum of the Man of 1937. The European painters of the years 1830-40, living in Paris, students at the School of Fine Arts, founded in 1817, and in the workshops of the great painters of neo-Classicism and Academicism, frequented the Louvre. The gilding of the backgrounds of the flat paintings, without perspective or volumes, without psychological expression, of the Paleocristian art, Byzantine (as they travel in Italy, and not at all in Dakar or Cameroon), Romanesque art and primitive Gothic have clearly More nourished their inspiration more than the Negro masks they did not know. Picasso Yes, maybe, but much later. If an influence outside Europe could have a role in the development of modern art it would be more advisable to look for the side of Japan. The Japanese fashion, "Japanism ", is felt from the years 1850 and following.

This "Modern Art" which is born with the European romantics and the French impressionists is a radical and voluntary change of aesthetic compared to all the time that has elapsed between 1350 and 1850, Five centuries of painting "naturalist". Starting from Modern Art, European painting no longer seeks to reproduce as closely as possible the world around it, it seeks to suggest it, to reinvent it by analyzing it, breaking it down, distorting it, simplifying it, the synthesizing. In addition to Nature, the city, domestic interiors, portraits, the body of women, are also test grounds of Modernism, and this since the post-Impressionists.
Very soon, the time comes for a search for new forms totally independent of the sensible reality. This is the time of the points of the circles, squares, rectangles, triangles, octagons, pyramids, lines …. all the Euclidean geometry will inspire abstract art. Here again, European art is also simply a return to the art of the steppes and to the beginnings of painted manuscripts, towards the 8th and 9th century, with its friezes of purely geometric motifs. The geometrism is one of the first artistic manifestations of man. In short, in the field of art it seems that Europe is moving forward, but recoiling

Abstract art, because it is not figurative, moves away from the sensible real, with necessary and inevitable consequences: A lack of sens, a loss of meaning, and therefore a rupture of the communication between the painter and His public. An audience that obviously thinks and feels emotions in resonance with the environment that he perceives through his eyes. A public, delayed from the point of view of some intellectuals, but for which the Euclidean geometry and the friezes are less evocative, less speaking, less meaningful than a landscape, a nude resembling or a faithful portrait. The absence of meaning is therefore necessarily, by definition, at the end of the path of abstraction. We then see an extreme individualist art, autistic, which leaves each spectator the task of finding a meaning to a painting, or not finding one. I have sketched elsewhere some of the positive or negative aspects and the questions that may arise from the lack of shared meaning between the artist and the public in abstract art ((Abstract art: the Beautiful without the Meaning?)
Abstract Art therefore necessarily leads to non-sense, understood as the lack of meaning that can be perceived by the viewer and shared with him. But the non-sense of abstract art is not the absurd and is not ugliness, these two great inventions of the Contemporary Art, from the years 1950. It is necessary to note that with the Contemporary Art, it is obviously, for a time, the death of the beauty and meaning in the Western Official Art. An ideology of the ugliness, the aberrant, the abject, and the sytematic provocation has imposed itself in official circles and proudly occurs in museums built entirely for it. Even if the Influents let live the private commercial art and street art, this official art inhabited by a whole system of non-values, cut off populations, while the popular art is confined in "Reserves", as elephants and whales, is not a sign of social dialogue. The Official Contemporary Art ( OCA) no longer has an inter-social role and is established as a reserve for enlightened.
The Sages and Guardians of the Universal Republic as conceived by Plato in the 5th century BC, finally put into practice in the 21st century, have their reserved art. As for the "un-enlightened" peoples of the base of the pyramid, have television, radio, advertising, photography, street art and private commercial art.
