A new photo series – ICONS – featuring influential women throughout history.
Cher rose to fame in the 1960’s as part of the husband and wife duo Sonny and Cher. Cher then embarked on a solo career that would last for decades.
Goldmine magazine’s Phill Marder described Cher as the leader of an effort in the 1960s to "advance feminine rebellion in the rock world [and] the prototype of the female rock star, setting the standard for appearance [and] attitude".
Cher branched into acting as well, both in theater and film, and in 1988 she won the Academy Award for her role in Moonstruck.
As a style icon, Cher popularized long black hair, bell-bottoms, bare midriff, bandannas, and Cherokee-inspired tunics. Cher was the first woman to expose her naval on television, and two years prior to her Academy Award win, Cher wore a Bob Mackie dress to the Oscars that has become one of the most famous awards dresses of all time.
