The secret garden of Colombo
On the green side, in the suburban air of the city lies the secret garden Gothama Thapowanaya temple which is a hidden jewel of busy Colombo. It’s a place to regain lost energies, discover tropical plants and animals, withdraw the senses from external distractions by sighting the buddha in many forms.
You enter the path to the main statue through a natural gate of an spectacularly intertwined banyan tree and by walking barefoot on the soil surrounded by the green of the little jungle you can already sense transcendence in the air.
It’s the perfect place to flee the hectic of the traffic and get an insight into the ever present buddhist culture in Sri Lanka surrounded by the vibrations of mantras and chirping birds.
The grove encompasses a buddhist monastery which offers different services as a meditation centre for Vipassana meditation, a Bikkhu Training Institute and an orphanage.
