George M. Brinkerhoff (1839-1928) was a prominent citizen of Springfield heavily engaged in the business, civic and political life of the city. Elijah E. Myers, the architect who designed the state capitol buildings in Michigan, Texas and Colorado, was commissioned by Brinkerhoff to design this Italianate style house that was completed in 1870.
After Brinkerhoff’s death in 1928, the house was purchased by Springfield College in Illinois (now Benedictine University at Springfield). The George M. Brinkerhoff House was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1978.
