CAPE MAY — The Friends of the Cape May Music Festival invite the public to a chamber music concert featuring the Mountain Winds Wind Quintet performing the Cape May premiere of Daniel Dorff’s “Cape May Breezes,” and works by Elgar, Danzi and Draganski. The concert is being held at the Inn of Cape May, 7 Ocean St., on Sunday, Oct. 6, at 3 p.m.
The Friends are an affinity group of the Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts & Humanities (MAC); they share a passion for classical music, helping to support the annual Cape May Music Festival during its three-week residency in May and June and extend its presence in the community all year, through related events such as this concert.
The program will feature the following works: Edward Elgar’s “Six Promenades”; Franz Danzi Quintet in G minor, Op. 56, No. 2; Donald Draganski’s “Klezmer Music” and Dorff’s “Cape May Breezes.”
Dorff had this to say about his commission, “Cape May Breezes”:
“When flutist Jenny Cline proposed a commission for The Monmouth Winds, the image of a breezy shore came to mind immediately, with the wind instruments portraying ocean breezes. Only a few thoughts later, this became a suite of Cape May scenes, inspired by the quaint town at the southern tip of New Jersey. Cape May is known for its popular beach, for nature preserves that attract migrating birds and butterflies, for day trips and family vacations, for entertainment by Philadelphia musicians bartering concerts for hotel stays, and above all for its Victorian architecture, summer homes, and bed & breakfasts.” (Source: www.danieldorff.com/pn-cmb.htm).
Mountain Winds was formed in 2006 with two goals in mind: to meet and play the varied repertoire available for this instrumental combination, and to provide a professional performing ensemble in the Pocono area. The group rehearses and performs a wide variety of music from classical to contemporary, pops to patriotic, and marches, ragtime and Dixieland.
