The majority of tunnelling for the Great North Road took place between 1940 and 1944, extending from the north face of the Rock of Gibraltar and exiting near the south. Called the Great North Road as homage to the road of the same name that traverses the north to south of England, naming conventions in this tunnel loosly stick to the theme. The tunnel is part of a 32 mile network that accommodated up to 16,000 troops, vehicles, fuel and supplies during the Second World War. This northern stretch of the Great North Road starts roughly at the halfway mark at the Foss Way entrance and extends north to the Calpe Hole generating station and hospital. Many of the tunnels are still under MOD ownership and visits can be organised through MOD guides.
