A Greater Painted Snipe fighting with her partner in the wet fields

A beautiful resident snipe in the country easily seen during the summers – I think it is locally migratory for short distances. The bird is prized by the photographers due to its beautiful plumage. The one here is a female which is more colorful and beautiful. The species exhibits reverse sexual dimorphism – meaning females are more beautiful than the males.
Outside of the breeding season they are quite hard to spot. The bird is easily seen in the summer during breeding season where it actively hunts for food in the wet soil much of the time. Outside of that period, during the paddyfield sowing season, it is visible when the fields are wet and muddy in preparation for the saplings to be planted.
