In Zihuatanejo, Guerrero we stay at the Catalina Beach Resort on Play la Ropa – 25 years on.
Catalina Beach Resort is a small hotel (54 rooms), nestled in a setting of lush tropical gardens on a hill overlooking magnificent La Ropa Beach, one of the finest beaches in Mexico and the hotel is situated on the best part of the bay.
The creamy white sand of the pristine beaches and the warm crystalline waters of the beautiful bay of Zihuatanejo convinced Mr. Alfonso Galindo Mackintosh to build this hotel in the 1950’s and name it after his wife and daughter, both named Catalina.
In the late 60’s the hotel was purchased by Carlos Breuer and wife Eva Bergtold and they built the adjoining Hotel Sotavento.
Carlos died in the 90’s, a family feud ensued. The Catalana went to Eva, the Sotavento to a daughter.
Today Eva is in failing health and her son is managing the property from afar. We are really worried (petrified) about the hotels future. It has no heritage protection and developers are sniffing around.
The lack of customers due to COVID-19 is having a huge impact on the hotels financial viability.
