Monumento al Centro Geografico de Mexico:
This monument stands as a curiosity and historical comment more than fact.
The plumb bob hangs over a map of Mexico with Tequis at the centre. The real centre co-ordinates are on the plaque visible on the yellow wall in the background.
In 1916 under the command of Venustiano Carranza during the Mexican Revolution, Tequis was declared the geographic centre of the country and the monument was built to validate the data. It is now known the data is subjective.
The true centre of Mexico is in Guanajuato or the desert of Zacatecas or maybe in —–? read on for more or less.
Several locations would like to be the centre.
Many Mexicans claim the center is in Guanajuato state at Cerro del Cubilete, a prominent steep-sided hill between the cities of Silao and Guanajuato. A large religious statue sits on its top and is a popular destination for pilgrims.
Another and maybe more accurate location is in the plains of Zacatecas state per the government mapping and statistics organization, INEGI.
