197. New York Cheesecake Camera

I’m so sick of seeing NY cheesecake offered as a specialty item on menus, like in McDonald’s in Hong Kong.
My ode to cheesecake qualifies as a dessert. A lovely dinner of Oden and Sake in Ueno was the inspiration.
The presentation kit is suitably refined but also earthy, and with pedigree.
Two tiny wooden boxes are wrapped in a furoshiki cloth which comprises the camera bag.
Inside one of the boxes is a camera in the manner and shape of a sake cup. Three tiers: an interior viewfinder, a paper container of sweet sake and a pinhole enclosure sit above the cup assembly. The pinhole is uncovered by removing the sake cup (the lens cover is spring loaded). A nod to tradition has the phases of the moon viewed elegantly in the interior vf, a sake moon viewing party in a cup. Herschel’s observatory was in my thoughts, an unconscious leap within the design.
The second of the boxes contains a tiny tent made of muslin with a chain and ring. Inside is a pre-cut serving of cheese in a rounded platef. The folded muslin is dampened and provides both moisture and aeration. The cheese I envision is a washed rind French cheese, Livarot, one of Napoleon’s favorites. That is my cheese dessert,
and difficult to obtain what with the very short ripening period of a good wheel of Livarot.
To be fair, as a lifelong New Yorker, I can recommend the cheesecake at the City Crab restaurant as one of the best, as well as Eileen’s cheesecake (the mixed fruit larger size that’s about tastes much better so it makes a very nice birthday or party cake).
