Hockney and more

For the last 15 years, we have never missed a trip without having lunch at Mokonuts. What is truly amazing is that Moko and Omar (her husband) continue to put out delicious food every single time based on what is in season, and then, of course, there are the cookies.

Also, they are lovely people. We have now gone to Mokochaya three times for breakfast, which feels very much like an extension of Mokonuts, and being able to pop our head in to say hello and catch up in a town that we visit often feels epic.

She told me how to make my chocolate chip cookies better (i.e., heat), and if I could, I would dive into her recipe book, which I never see her sharing with the world. Sigh. The newest cookie is a turmeric ginger coconut, and I might have to spend the summer figuring out how to make it.

The big show is 25 years of David Hockney at the Louis Vuitton Foundation. There are many things I love about Hockney’s work, and one of them is how comfortable he always felt in his skin as a gay man. This piece he made when he was 24 years old, his second year at the Royal Arts College, when being gay was illegal in England. It is also a nod to a Walt Whitman poem. Throughout his career (he continues to put out work) his nod to other artists have always been part of his practice.

The third thing, which is why he is a renowned artist, is that as his work has evolved, at a ripe old age ot 87, he has embraced technology. His works on the iPad, including the videos, are among my favorite pieces.

Dinner was in the 2nd. This huge arc, situated in the middle of the street, defines Paris. Landmarks have ensured that the city remains the same from the outside perspective. That is why walking is such a joy here.

Our dinner was at L’Atro Frenchie, a new spot that opened last year. We have visited Frenchie numerous times over the years. I love how all his spots are down an alleyway where people can hang out and pop in at each place. In the morning, the street is filled with all the products they are planning to use that day. I wanted to love it, but I didn’t. The menu is tight, and the dishes were heavy-handed. Our friends went a few months ago and loved it, so it could have been a meh night.

We wandered back home to bed, taking in the sounds of Paris.
