“Every sensitive person carries in himself old cities enclosed by ancient walls.”
ROBERT WALSER
This is a profound quote by Robert Walser, a Swiss writer, born in 1878 and died in 1956.
It just seems that some people who tend to think about what they are going to say before blurting something out, can see something deeper in what is happening, compared to others. I understand that verbal processing for some is the best way to get to the bottom of what they are thinking or the best way for them to understand a situation.
This quote reminds me of a Proverb from the Bible that I am very fond of:
Counsel in a person’s heart is deep water;
but a person of understanding draws it out.PROVERBS 20:5 (CSB)
For me, I feel like there are few people who can really draw out my thoughts in a way that both helps me and helps others. Those people are very special to me. Any time we get together and they can probe the “deep waters” with me, it is a life-giving time together.
Something that I would like to grow in is listening to others. Slowing down and taking time to listen with my ears and my mind and my heart. I want to grow in giving space for others to express their thoughts and feelings and to share their lives with me. I believe practicing that, growing in that, would help me to draw out the understanding in others. I believe that is a type of wisdom. I want to draw from others’ spirits the deep understanding that is within them.
