Book Review: The Tenant – A twisty psychological thriller

Title: The Tenant
Author: Freida McFadden
Genre: Thriller, Crime, Mystery

Publisher: Hollywood Upstairs Press

Rating: 3.8/5

Hello dear readers! I was on vacation the previous month, and now I’m back to the old grind. I thought I would finally begin my TBR (piling high now!), but I spotted Frieda McFadden’s new book, The Tenant, and couldn’t resist! You guys know how much I enjoy her books, and I thought to give this a quick read before moving on to my TBR.

Here’s the blurb for you.

There’s no place like home…

Blake Porter is riding high, until he’s not. Fired abruptly from his job as a VP of marketing and unable to make the mortgage payments on the new brownstone that he shares with his fiancee, he’s desperate to make ends meet.

Enter Whitney. Beautiful, charming, down-to-earth, and looking for a room to rent. She’s exactly what Blake’s looking for. Or is she?

Because something isn’t quite right. The neighbors start treating Blake differently. The smell of decay permeates his home, no matter how hard he scrubs. Strange noises jar him awake in the middle of the night. And soon Blake fears someone knows his darkest secrets…

Danger lives right at home, and by the time Blake realizes it, it’ll be far too late. The trap is already set.

The Tenant is a standalone book. Blake is happy with his new promotion, but then, out of nowhere, he gets blamed for cheating and is fired. He looks for another job while his fiancée manages the house. Blake doesn’t want to get a tenant, but he knows that they could use the extra money. When Whitney arrives as their tenant, he is not ready for what is to come.

The story begins with a good pace. It is a thriller after all, and it doesn’t disappoint with its twists and turns. As usual, the author provides sufficient backstory for the characters and the plot development. The writing style is brilliant! One simply cannot put the book down, especially when the author ends chapters with lines like these:

” Except… why does this voice in the back of my head keep telling me to get rid of her right now, while I still can?”

The end of Part 1 is riveting and shocking, and when Part 2 began with this line, “Don’t worry, they both deserved it,” my inquisitiveness shot through the roof. I love what the author does with her words!

But the ending didn’t pack a punch, in my opinion. Unlike her other books, this one didn’t leave me buzzing. The last bit, where Amanda has an epilogue, was unnecessary as it didn’t do anything for the story.

Nevertheless, The Tenant was a quick and intense read, but if you are new to Freida McFadden, I would suggest The Housemaid series to begin with. You can find my reviews of other books by the author here.
