Alexander Technique can help alleviate back pain by improving posture, movement and mind-body awareness.
We regularly receive referrals from GP’s, osteopaths and physios, who have noticed that a potential cause of their patients’ aches and pains might be postural habits, which are often exacerbated by lifestyle, an obvious example being a desk-bound job or regular mobile phone usage.
With Alexander Technique you can learn greater awareness of postural and breathing habits, and gradually improve them.
The NHS website has a very clear description of sciatica https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/sciatica/ and its possible causes, and does not list Alexander Technique as a possible treatment. It does however suggest physiotherapy. The NHS also correctly states that “most teachers of Alexander Technique are not medical professionals.
They should not diagnose, offer advice on or treat conditions that should be managed by a suitably qualified mainstream healthcare professional.” Anecdotally however, Alexander Technique teachers at Pimlico and elsewhere have all helped sufferers of sciatica at different stages of the condition. This testimonial is one example.
Last year the NHS website’s description of Alexander Technique was updated as follows: in recent years some NHS trusts have started to offer Alexander technique lessons as part of their outpatient pain clinics. Ask your GP whether it’s available through the NHS in your local area.
Alexander Technique is a preventative method. This testimonial is an example of how sciatica can be managed so that it does not return and cause acute pain.

SCIATICA TESTIMONIAL
This client suffered on & off for 10 years with debilitating sciatica…
“It has quite simply given me my life back.
I tried all the usual things: physiotherapy, osteopathy, acupuncture, Pilates, Yoga, ‘core strengthening’ exercises. Nothing prevented the sciatica from re-occurring.
When I was 45, a friend suggested I try Alexander Technique. My lower back at that time still felt extremely tight, precarious and weak. I remember my first session with Susanna as being refreshingly informative, practical and enjoyable.
The Alexander Technique involves hands-on guidance but there is no sort of manipulation or massage or ‘exercises ’ so to speak. I remember also that during the session the muscular tension that I had been feeling so intensely for so long in my lower back appeared to vanish into thin air. Susanna sowed the seed that it was possibly my patterns of movement and postural habits that were at the root of my problems – and that this could be prevented. The day after my lessonmy whole body felt so different; it felt light and easy rather than compressed, strained, tense and heavy. I cannot recommend Susanna Scouller and the Pimlico Alexander Technique centre highly enough.”
